I’ve told you before that I’d never recommend another player in a series, but these past two weeks I’ve found myself arguing that we all should be excited about a 22-year-old who had just 19 catches in his first two seasons with the Carolina Panthers. Now he’s been the subject of trade rumors for a third straight season and we’re talking about his future, so that should give us pause, right?
Well, here’s something else you need to know about Greg Olsen: he’s not the best receiver in the league. At this time of year, when we think about who’s actually the best, we often think about a player who’s been, or is about to be, in the mix for a Super Bowl. Or we think about a receiver who’s a key part of the offense or has put up outstanding numbers despite not having the same opportunity to work with the quarterback he had a year ago. A new receiver is generally not a target. This season’s group of luminaries is not so great.
But if you keep things in perspective, you realize that Olsen is having a tremendous season. He’s eighth in the league in receiving yards, fourth in the league in touchdowns and second in the league in red zone targets. The latter is misleading because even though he’s been targeted in the red zone 12 times and has scored 10 times, he hasn’t had a single red zone target in the past three games because of Aaron Rodgers’ sub-par passing.
